Ruth Fulton Benedict

Though partially deaf and unable to receive grants or loans, Ruth Fulton Benedict was able to pursue her career in Anthropology and attend Columbia University. While at Columbia, Benedict studied under the supervision of Franz Boas, who would later become a huge impact on her life as a mentor. Benedict later wrote a couple of books “emphasizing the power of custom and learning as an argument against nature and for the infinite capacity of human beings to change.” Benedict conferred her Ph.D. in anthropology in 1923.
