BUS TOUR OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES OF THE AMERICAN BOTTOM AND ADJACENT UPLANDS

SPONSORED BY THE CAHOKIA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY

AND LED BY DR. JOHN KELLY

SUNDAY, MARCH 30, 2014, 9 AM TO 3 PM

“PERINO REVISITED”

This coach tour will retrace the route of a tour that was led by self-taught archaeologist Gregory Perino in 1990.  A group of ten professional and amateur archaeologists accompanied Greg, a Belleville native, as he recounted
his extensive and detailed knowledge of sites in the American Bottom and adjacent uplands where he had collected and excavated over a period of 40-50 years, some of that work being done for the Gilcrease Institute in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  In many instances, Greg
was the only person who knew something about many of these sites and his comments were recorded, videotaped, and documented on maps.  As we revisit many of these sites, Dr. Kelly will update us on what is known about these sites and others that are passed
along the route. If you have traveled with us before, you already know the quality of his tours and expertise and, if this is your first CAS bus tour, you are in for a treat!

The tour bus will leave the Cahokia Mounds Interpretive Center parking lot
precisely at 9 a.m., so arrive before then and park in the back end of the main parking lot.  We will return by 3 p.m.  You should
bring your own lunch — coolers will be provided at Cahokia Mounds so you don’t have to carry the lunches on the bus. The first part of the tour will visit the sites north and east of Cahokia. We will return to Cahokia to eat lunch (bring your own lunches).
The second half of the tour will visit sites to the south of Cahokia. The final stop before returning to the main parking lot will be at the Monks Mound parking lot where Dr. Kelly will discuss Perino’s extensive work and discoveries in the Ramey Field and
Mound 34.  Most of the tour to some 15 sites will be while in transit on the bus with only a few stops where people will disembark, including a stop at Falling Springs in Dupo for a group photo. (tour route subject to change)

Cost:  The fee is $30 per person (non-refundable), payable to CAS.
Lunch is not included, so bring your own.  Water will be provided on the bus.

Reservations:  There will be 54 seats available on the bus, on a
first-come, first-served basis.  Reservations can be made by calling 618-345-6454 and leaving your name and phone number.

The bus fills up quickly so register as soon as possible.
Payment must be received in advance by March 25 in order to guarantee a seat, and seats are not guaranteed until your check is received.  If the bus is full, a “waiting list” will be maintained in the order received in case there are cancellations
and those payments can be made the day of the bus trip.

Checks may be made out to CAS, and mailed to CAS, 414 N. Morrison Ave, Collinsville, IL 62234.
